Warning: Bocagrande

  • PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE NOTES ARE TO ASSIST SMALL RECREATIONAL VESSELS (LESS THAN 25 TONS) ONLY. For vessels drawing less than 7 feet the entrance through the submerged wall joining the Island of Tierra Bomba to the Bocagrande peninsula could prove a valuable time saver. The entrance is 70 mtrs wide and is marked by a solitary red and green channel marker (RRR). THese buoys are lit but backlighting at night could be a problem. Try to approach the entrance on a bearing of approx 90 degrees. THe position of this entrance is roughly one third the didtance from Bocagrande to Tierra Bomba. The GPS position is N 10 º 23.370´ W 75º34.285´.

  Bocagrande

Boca Chica

  • Cartagena is a major commercial port with frequent visits by container vessel, tankers, bulkcarriers and cruseliners. The entrance through Boca Chica reflects this with good channel markers (Red Right Returning).
  • On approaching Call Port Control CH14/16 advising them of your arrival.
Try keeping close to the gree buoys. Make sure you`re in the channel when passing Punta Arenas, East of Tierra Bomba (formely trying to pass outside the channel at this point, leaving green to starboard entering would land you on a reef; the buoy has since been moved to a safer position but be cautious ).

Bocachica

Anchorage.

The anchorage surrounds the Club Nautico dock, 300mtrs from the Western most point off the island of MANGA (the masts of boats docked at the "Club de Pesca" will be visible at this point ). Depths range from 8 to 15 mtrs Sw off the dock. To the NW depths vary between 1.8 and 3 mtrs from the buoyed channel to 50mtrs from shore. Moderate holding.

Difficulties.

Call the Coast Guard on CH 16 or 14. Towing can be organized through "Coast Guard San Jose" (based at the entrance to Bocachica).

Arriving

Have the Q flag hoisted and bring your dinghy to our dinghy dock to begin the formalities. We usually have a responsive and helpful maritime agency operating from our premises that can organize all the necessary paperwork. For a fee of around $US 80 (plus Certificado de Permanencia) you can sit back and enjoy your new surroundings and wait for the return of all documentation legalizing your stay (in some cases a trip to the immigration office may be necessary). The fee includes the issuing of the departing cruising permit when you decide to leave us. Vessels arriving destined officially for another port (Zarpe`d to Colon for example) may need to be inspected by someone nominated by the Port Capitain´s office. The charges for this inspection for small vessels are modest.

Temporary Import

An appliaction for Temporary Importation must be made on arrival, either by using your agent or by applying directly (10mins walk fromClub Nautico). Currently the Customs Office (DIAN) makes no charge for this process. It is valid for 1 year. An extension for an additional year can almost always be obtained.

People

Check visa requirements before entry (no problem for citizens of Canada, USA, Europa, Australia, and NZ). We see a large number of sailors from South Africa where an entry visa is required (there are plans to change this particular requirement). In such cases a shorepass can usually be organized for short stays; better to have the required visa. Make sure the visa issued is valid from the time of entry.

Length of Stay

US citizens will automatically be issued with a 60-day entry stamp on arrival. After this period 1 month extensions can be organized (costing approx. $30.00 US per person) up to a period of 6 months. After this period you will need to leave. The immigration policy occasionally changes but presently if a person has been in Colombia for an accumulated period of 6 month they are obliged to leave for 6 months before returning. In practice this process is not well defined. We would advise those planning to spend an extended period here (a surprising number end up wanting to) to contact a nearby Colombian consulate and apply for the appropiate visa.
